Day 35, Chillán to Mulchén
Well, this was an absolutely grand day. The "free ride" was over with respect to tail winds. Oh well, easy come, easy go. The landscape has changed dramatically such that it now looks very similar to places in Alberta or B.C. Rolling hills, pine trees, open pastures. Stayed at the small village of Mulchén and finished off the day by joining the locals and swimming at the meandering Bureo River that passes close to town. By the end of the day it was at north of 25 deg C.
Tot time 7 hrs 37 min, ride time 6 hrs 34 min, 146 km, elevation gain 751 m, elevation loss 721 m.
Day 36, Mulchén to Temuco
Countryside still looks a lot like places close to home but today was overcast and grey most of the day. And Chile, I mean chilly. The lumber industry has taken over as the big industry as far as I can tell. Am about 660 km south of Santiago. The coastal range has long since gone and the Andes to the east are not nearly as daunting. Rivers now drain westerly to the Pacific which makes for a lot more "up and downs".
Tot time 6 hrs 50 min, ride time 6 hrs, 138 km, elevation gain 1,006 m, elevation loss 1,034 m
Coming Up....
Will be departing from my dear friend, the Panamericana Highway, tomorrow (Nov 29). Next destination is Pucón which is nestled in the height of the Andes and has beautiful national park which I will be doing some exploring on foot (yes, the bike sobbed when I broke the news but that is life). Again, will be making an attempt on Volcano Lanin in a few days.
ps. Nice to hear from everybody! Your messages are appreciated and always read.
pps. Sister Joy, don´t know if I will be doing the Birkie this time. Maybe I´ll just cheer you on. Please, I´ll need a little time to get my skiing legs going.
I am embarking on a bike tour from La Paz, Bolivia to Tierra del Fuego. I should be on my bike by October 24th. I have three months to complete this journey. I am doing this trip solo ... unless of course I get any last minute (or last second) offers from friends and family who wish to accompany me. The following map shows the approximate route I will be taking. Along the way, I hope to have time to do a little bit of trekking and perhaps enjoy some fine Chilean wine.

Hey Mek,
Took a break from reading about your trip as I was getting tired just reading about the elevation gain and loss. I'm back now though and ready to armchair travel for a while. Great pictures. Sure looks hot. If fricken cold up here now and its full on winter in the mountains. Snow, wind, ice. The whole catastrophe. Skiied Saturday and went ice climbing Sunday. Brian and I almost had a 'fiasco' on Sunday. I forgot my harness. Normally I'd just turn back as I think thats just bad karma but Brian was keen so we forged on. Brian lent me his harness and he made a harness out of webbing, etc. Of course this meant I had to lead the climb as I couldn't weasel out of that part too. It went well but then the ropes got caught on the rappel and we had to leave one behind. Luckily they were Brians ropes (don't tell him I said that). I took the Porsche into the Ghost and got to use the pneumatic lifters to raise the truck two inches. Totally wild. I felt like a real chicano. minus the tattoos and bandannas.
On the work front, my boss got fired last week. I haven't figured out how to work that to my advantage yet (besides continuing to screw the pooch) but I will. We had a heap big meeting today witht he whole crew and the new CEO was asking if we did any charity work. I told him I did alot of work with unwed mothers. It took a while for everyone to get it. I need to set the bar alot lower.
Keep the piks coming. You must be close to halfway, no? Any chance of another climb later in the trip?
Hi Darryl,
Bryan pointed me to your blog and have been following the journey for a few days. Good guts for taking on an adventure like this. Great pics of the trip.
My company, Timberline Natural Resource Group has a subsidiary company in Chile and you are riding through our working area now. The company is Koyam (koyam.cl) with offices in Temuco, Lonquimay, Carahue, Lumaco, Teodoro Schmidt. They are involved in land reclamation, reforestation, nurseries.
Maybe you have ridden, or will ride through some of their operations. Stop in and have some monkey puzzle seeds at one of the offices.
Good luck with the rest of the journey.

Greetings from Calgary, D!
I'm back in Calgary this week and it is COLD! Arrived at midnight on Monday evening and woke up to >2 inches of dry fluffy white snow on Tuesday morning. It was so dry it blew off the car.
It has warmed up a bit and I return to California on Friday evening. Just in time to turn around so I'm back in Calgary on Sunday by midnight. Home on Friday and back again Sunday. Yeesh ...
Your blog and photos are great! It is fabulous to read your blog and follow along with the photos every day or two.
Can you provide some visibility into where you think you will be between now and the end of your trip? Just some insight so everyone can look ahead with you.
Ride safe.
Best,
B
